The Wyoming Association of Secondary School Principals, WASSP, represents over 130 school admninistrators across Wyoming. Typically, these administrators are Principals or Assistant Principals in High Schools, Jr. High Schools and Middle Schools.
Our primary focus is the professional development for building level administrators. To meet that goal, we hold many conferences or workshops each year in different areas of the state. We also encourage attendance at the national NASSP Convention. |

NASSP'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RECEIVES AWARD FORMER CONNECTICUT COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION AWARDED ELLIS ISLAND MEDAL OF HONOR 107 honored for their contributions to the national identity of the United States Reston, VA-Dr. Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), has been named one of this year's recipients of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Past recipients include former presidents Carter, Bush and Clinton, along with a host of activists, entertainers and artists, sports figures and journalists. Among this year's recipients are E. Neville Isdell, Chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola Company, Jacques Nasser, former CEO of Ford Motor Company and Gary Sinise, Actor and Founder of Operation Iraqi Children. Tirozzi, head of NASSP since 1999, is a former Commissioner of Education in the state of Connecticut (1983-1991) and a former Assistant Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education (1996-1999). The Ellis Island Medal of Honor is annually bestowed upon individuals who have maintained their own unique heritage and values while contributing to the national identity of the country and making service to the community their life's work. Dr. Tirozzi has spent close to 50 years working to improve teaching and learning for all students. A Connecticut native, he led the implementation of ground-breaking education programs and initiatives in that region. While serving as Commissioner of Education in Connecticut, he helped usher in the Connecticut Mastery Test-an assessment that many states continue to model their own programs after. Dr. Tirozzi served as Superintendent of the New Haven, Connecticut Public Schools (1977-1983) and he spent two years as President of Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts (1991-1993). From there, he moved on to a tenured professorship at the University of Connecticut where his concentration was on urban education, educational policy and the preparation of school superintendents (1993-1995). As head of NASSP, Dr. Tirozzi has helped lead the organization to a position of greater influence in the congressional arena and has helped drive the creation and distribution of a number of heavily touted publications, including Breaking Ranks, Breaking Ranks II, Breaking Ranks in the Middle, Creating a Culture of Literacy and Making the Math Curriculum Count. The organization boasts of healthy membership of 30,000+ school leaders and recently launched the National Elementary Honor Society, which promises to be a great addition to NASSP's already well-respected group of student programs, which includes the National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society and the National Association of Student Councils. As a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, Dr. Tirozzi is now among a select group of Americans who have been recognized for demonstrating what it means to take full advantage of the American dream.
